Teen Skin

With hormones going wild, stress of exams and the pressure that comes with taking pride in their appearance, it’s no wonder some teens struggle with their skin. The massive hormonal change take takes place in our teen years plays a big part in teen breakouts, causing more production of sebum along with a thicker consistency, teamed with a fault in the shedding of dead skin cells, all of which results in clogged pores causing blackheads, whiteheads and spots. So how can we help our teens?

Our top tips...

1.      Keep on top of exfoliating...

In problematic skins, we tend to find an issue with the natural cell turnover rate, this means that instead of the cells sheading every 28-30days as they do in a healthy skin, the cells come away usually much slower, clogging up our skin and trapping oil within the pores. Using skin care with a gentle AHA formula will help to keep on top of this alongside an enzyme based exfoliator 1-2 times a week. Please seek advice before starting teens on any AHA based products, they will not be suitable for every skin. We recommend Nimue exfoliating enzyme alongside Nimue Y:SKIN for teens.

2.      Check your products...

Stay away from comedogenic ingredients, these block the pores and result in blackheads and spots. A few ingredients to look out for are coconut oil, cocoa butter, squalene, mineral oil, coal tar, lanolin, propylene glycol, to name a few. Be sure to check skin care, make up and hair products.

3.      Invest in a good spf for the face...

UV light kills the good bacteria on our skin, which leaves bacteria levels unbalanced which in turn leads to breakouts. Look for a product that doesn’t clog the pores and contains anti oxidants. We recommend Nimue environmental shield spf 50, which gives high level protection against UVA, UVB, HEV, IR and pollution, along with a matt finish.

4.      Cleanse your face twice a day...

This keeps on top of any oil and dirt that may have settled on the skins surface.

5.      Use a spot treatment...

For bigger, more painful or if you tend to only get the odd spot, spot treatments can work really well. Look for one that contains Salicylic acid to rapidly clear out the pore. We recommend Nimue Spot treatment
